. >> governor there is still plenty of time for mr. romney to make inroads in your fair state, but why do you think he's doing so badly? is it because he had done nothing to save the auto industry? is it because he says he doesn't care about half the population of the country? or is it because nobody understands what he stands for outside of tax cuts? >> all of the above, martin. beginning when we found out he had a swiss bank account, investments in the caymen islands -- >> switzer land. >> outsourcer of jobs. he went on and on and on. his wife has two cadillacs, an elevator for his cars in his home. and then he says on videotape that he's writing off 47% of the american people just basically talking in the most disdainful way about good hard working americans. veterans, poor people who are working their hearts out to make a living. >> governor have ii have to -- i'm sorry, i have to interrupt you because mr. romney and mr. ryan are saying it's the president who are into social divisiveness. they are the ones splitting the countries between the have and have nots. the
for the emergency services, and mr. romney might consider doing the same with the president now leading nine swing states by an average of six points consistent with his national average. the three newest battleground polls show yet more evidence of mr. romney's september slump. north carolina, the president up by two. nevada, the president up by two. even new hampshire, site of one of mr. romney's many luxury homes, the president leading by seven points. but what about all that jet skiing? well, never fear, mitt's hard at work doing what he does best, attending a fund-raiser today at philadelphia's union club. here it is, looks quite posh. i guess it should be at $50,000 a plate. wait a minute, no, sorry, that's wrong. that's a mistake. that was actually from "trading places," the firm of duke & duke. here is the actual video. let's listen to mr. romney on his chances in the keystone state. >> on november 6th i'm going to win pennsylvania and i'm going to become the next president of the united states. >> okay. just to clarify, the romney campaign is running no ads whatsoever in pennsylvania. mr.
mr. romney really does care. just listen as he explained his compassionate side to nbc's ron mott last night. >> don't forget, i got everybody in my state insured, 100 b% of e kids in our state has health insurance. i don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record. >> wow, what a great argument for defending the president a's affordable care act. romney went straight up onto the podium and told us what he really thinks of helping to cover the uninsured. >> obama care is really exhibit number one of the president's political philosophy, and that is that government knows better that be people how to run their lives. >> mitt romney, it's 4:00, just 40 days to election. do you know where your playbook is? let's get right to our handle. with us from washington, msnbc political analyst karen finney, dana mill bank, a political columnist for "the washington post," and mike, a white house correspondent for "time" magazine. karen, mr. romney proudly offered his own health care reform as evidence that he cares about pe
house coespoenr im zi karen, mr. romney proudly offered his own health care reform as evidence that he cares about people. 50 minutes later he says he'll repeal the president's health care reform. two of our producers have been hospitalized for whiplash having been forced to watch which w 's. kful they have health care. is even mr. romney himself now tired of the severely conservative mask that he himself has been forced to wear? >> indeed, i think he is. as we talked about earlier this week, just a year or two or three ago, he had exactly the oppoosion a criticizing the idea that people would, you know, go to emergency rooms and that -- talking very differently about health care. the problem with this is it plays to exactly hisundamental flaw as a candidate, which is u , vekeo 't trust him. people, even conservatives, a friend of mine's conservative mother had the best quote of all. she said i don't know if my issue is going to be the next thing that gets thrown under the bus. so when he whiplashes like this and makes it seem more likes just going to say whaver it is he thinks he nds
states that mr. romney finally sold those shares. he sold his shares the day before he appeared at this republican debate in iowa. i don't know if he thought he would get asked about them or not. now all of this it notes that he's not necessarily personally making the call on these investments. his money is kept in a blind trust. that said the idea you don't have to answer for investments made through a blind trust has been debunked on american politics. i thought this guy's argument was the most convincing on that. >> the blind trust is an age-old rouge to say you can tell the blind trust what it can and can't do. >> those rules include go ahead and invest my mitt romney bucks in the chinese oil company that calls itself a weapon and does business with iran just to spite us. while you're running for president, do that. you know, the election has already started. almost half the states in the country, people can get access to a ballot and vote by mail if they want to. you can do in-person early voting in idaho, south dakota and vermont. that also starts on thursday of this week
't the zinger likely to become something of a boomerang and hit mr. romney instead of his opponent? >> you know, everybody always remembers the great zingers. you know, usually something from ronald reagan, but here we go again expecting that people are going to try a little bit too hard. there's a real danger when you've been supplied with premixed, ready-made zingers to insert into the debate that mitt romney will insert them at the wrong time or say them not quite right. the only thing worse than having no zinger is having a zinger that comes off badly and comes back to bite you. so i think that's a perilous way to go, but i'll be there in denver, and i look forward to the attempts because it will make it far more interesting. >> indeed. we're delighted, ron, that you're here. you have devealed to us for the first time that you have prepped with mitt romney previously. >> i have. >> tell us a little bit about that. >> well, it was a remarkable experience. it was the 2008 campaign when he was running in the primaries. he assembled a smart group of folks to go up and run him through the paces.
the time. he brings it up all the time. it is his republican opponent, mr. romney, who has generally done his best to avoid the subject altogether. i have to say, credit where credit's due. today while he still did not go there directly, at least, at last, finally, today mitt romney got close to the subject. >> we have huge numbers of our men and women that are returning from conflict that are seeking counseling, psychological counseling, and can't find that counseling within our system. and, of course, record numbers of suicides. this is a crisis. >> that was mitt romney speaking today in springfield, virginia, to the american legion. and, no, he is still not apparently able to say anything about the war directly, but at least today where you saw him there, he did mention that this war has produced an outcome of war. which is american war veterans. neither the war nor its veterans were mentioned, of course, in mr. romney's speech to the nation upon becoming his party's nominee for president. he's trying to fix the veterans part of that oversight. he really as a candidate still seems inca
also offered some remarks. and in a breathless day of nonstop talk and travel, mr. romney has just arrived for a rousing event in ohio where he's desperately hoping to claw his way out of a substantial polling deficit. there are sign mrs. romney may be coming to his senses after joking at the clinton global initiative that he could do with a little help from a former president. >> if there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man a lot of good. all i got to do now is wait a couple days for that bounce to happen. >> right, we'll keep our eye on that. the other bump that romney loves to talk about these days is his attack on the president for saying the middle east would face bumps in the road and romney's suggestion that the president was somehow referring to the deaths of the american ambassador to libya and three other diplomats. a theme that romney reiterated today though in a more muted form. >> syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. the president of egypt is a member of the musl
. president obama masks are out selling mitt romney's masks by nearly 40%. congratulations, mr. president. when you think about it, mitt romney's been hiding behind a mask this entire election. a mask he only takes off in quiet rooms, behind closed doors, when he's talking to wealthy donors. but voters don't seem to like it much. and a new fox news poll, yes, fox news poll, shows romney trailing nationally by five points. and get this, he has a lower favorable rating than george w. bush. don't adjust your tv set. mr. romney is less liked than bush. huh? maybe that's something to do with the fact that he can't seem to answer basic questions. >> how was that? >> i have nothing. >> guys, here we go. >> guys -- it's just -- all we've got here is beef jerky? who here wants a piece of beef jerky? that's all i've got. this was given to us by jack link. >> what do you have planned for the weekend? >> anyone else? >> governor romney, they were asking about the debates, about the israeli prime minister, not about beef jerky. now, romney did answer questions from reporters later. but this is what he
the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns, or the lack thereof, or getting rich by laying off factory workers or the tape where he says half the country is a bunch of lazy bums and victims who depend on the government and he doesn't care about them. whatever it is that turned their candidate into the 2012 reincarnation of thurston howell except in this reincarnation thurston is mean, whatever it is that has done that it's just killing him in the polls in every state. if the romney campaign does nothing else they must, must, must make sure that nobody anywhere near mitt romney does that rich guy can't relate to people like me thing again. here's the romney campaign last night. >> both mitt and i have summer places up in new ha
from the way mr. romney was beaten in 2008. it may have left his campaign determined that he not get stuck with the flip flopper label again. even though they leave the ads with the lies in them up and sometimes mr. romney goes on tv invents a brand new policy position he's never had before. after he does that, his staff follows behind him and quietly releasing statements faeg back his quotes. when mr. romney was asked in an interview last week about one of his immigration advisers. he said he could not confirm whether kris kobch was part of his team. and they yes, he's a romney campaign adviser. so he tells an interview he's never met with him but his campaign says what he said was not true. same thing happened last month when mr. romney came out with a whole new policy position on abortion rights. >> i'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest in the health of the life of the mother. >> he says he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. afterwards the campaign said that's not what he believes. he doesn't actually support the legal ri
beach. and he went right at mr. romney on foreign policy and the wars. and he is -- he's right there when he says that we don't know what mr. romney would do if he . ey srely and. vaguely that he supports what president obama is doing in afghanistan in terms of there being a timeline for leaving but he has also said he was against a timeline for leaving in the past. so really who knows? he's not even trying. the closest we've gotten to any competing cont republican tin wa pbl wt sator john mccain at the republican convention when he said that the afghanistan war just shouldn't end. he also thinks that the iraq war shouldn't have ended. so i'm noture that it's a politicallviable position. even if it is an internally cogent one from the senar. fois yr'mi i apparently just not going to happen. not unless he starts it now. 40 days out, mitt romney did get as close as he gets to talking about the issue today. in that he spoke before a group of veterans and talked about a concern about veterans. even if he didn't say what he wa to do about tt con. mr. romney, in fact, implied that t
that mr. romney's team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing since august. zingers? mr. romney doesn't need zingers. he needs new ideas. he needs a new campaign. truth be told, he needs a new candidate. after all, the guy he's been debating all along has been himself on health care. >> i'm not getting rid of all of health care reform. of course, there are a number of things that i like in health care reform. >> well, of course. i'm going to repeal obama care. i've said that on the campaign trail. i think every single day obama care must be repealed in its entirety. >> he was for it before he was against it. and that auto bailout -- >> you said, quote, if general motors, ford, and chrysler gets the bailouts that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the automotive industry good-bye. >> that's exactly right. if you write a check, they are going to go out of business. >> my own view was that they needed to go through bankruptcy before government help and fina
, he is measured and careful of what he says. when i look at mr. romney, i am so sick and tired of the fear and warmongering and am afraid that he would start another military conflict in the middle east. as a voter, on that topic alone, president obama has my vote, because i do not believe that we and the world can afford another military conflict on this planet. thank you for allowing me to talk this morning. have a good day. host: thank you for your comments this morning. round rock, texas. caller: i agree with the republican that just called in, i also support the president as far as foreign affairs go. mr. romney used to belong to a chinese organization, it was an oil conglomerate. they were supporting iran. in 2011, mr. romney separated himself from these chinese oil conglomerate. he talks out of one side of his mouth, but acts out of another side. he said our greatest threat was russia when our greatest threat right now is al qaeda. i do not think that he has the experience or knowledge to help of foreign affairs. host: what do you make of his foreign policy affairs state

and confidence that mr. romney needs to fire up his bid for the presidency. >> my biggest concern obviously would just be for the -- his mental well-being. >> wait? what? mrs. romney, that's not helping. you better finish the thought. >> i have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness, in his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy, in his understanding of what's missing right now in the economy, you know, the pieces that are missing to get this jump started. so for me i think it would be the emotional part of it. >> right. he's capable, decisive, and emotionally troubled? well, that is an october surprise. let's get right to our panel this afternoon. with us from washington, msnbc political analyst karen finney, who is a democratic strategist. also julian epstein, who is a democratic strategist, and here in new york msnbc political analyst professor michael eric dyson. professor dyson, mitt romney's wife says she's concerned about his mental health. paul ryan says he's inarticulate. if he can't think straight and he can't speak properly, is mitt romney g
about that. mr. romney has been working on ways to address the idea that he's actually running to be president for 100% of the nation. and mr. romney has frankly complained several times in recent weeks that what he's worried about is the president will misrepresent he, mr. romney's positions. the governor of massachusetts complained the romney campaign distorted his position on abortion, taxes auto bailout and other things. one of the things they're prepared for is that rhetoric coming from the president and how mr. romney would call him out for lying to the public or being deceptive. a lot of that is going to play out. it's not just a battle of facts. both mr. obama and romney will come well prepared for that. it's how they conduct themselves, how they come across to viewers and a lot of that's very, very personal. frankly, you can't really rehearse it. that's what makes the anticipation so high. the expectation game so important, it's the unscripted moment that people are watching for. bill? >> bill: 50 million plus americans watching four years ago. huge audience. >>> 25-ye
